# Rooting

To root for someone is to buy their coin, hold it, or bring someone else to it. All three are paid.

## Buying and selling

You trade through Rooter's router against the coin's locked pool. You set your slippage and your deadline. On every trade, the fee hook takes 3% of the quote side before the swap runs:

* On a buy, 3% of the ETH or stock token you send is taken. The other 97% buys coins.
* On a sell, 3% of the ETH or stock token you receive is taken. You get the other 97%.

The pool itself charges no liquidity fee, because the only liquidity provider is the lock contract and it earns nothing. Three percent is the whole cost. It is the same headline the incumbent model charges, and [The numbers](/whitepaper/the-numbers.md) shows the bound that keeps it from ever going higher.

## Holding

Holding is rooting. Half a point of every trade on a coin goes into that coin's Rooter Pool, and the pool pays holders by balance and by time. You do not stake, lock or register. You hold, and you claim what you have earned whenever you like. The maths is in [The Rooter Pool](/whitepaper/the-rooter-pool.md).

## Bringing people

Every wallet has a root link for every coin. When a trade comes through your link, a quarter point of that trade is paid to you, in the quote asset, in that transaction. It comes out of the protocol's share, so the person and the other rooters are not touched. You earn on the trades you bring, not on the wallet you bring; the next time that person trades, they can use their own link. Referring yourself pays the same as referring nobody.

## Rooting is not endorsement

A coin about a person is a bet on attention, not a message from the person. Every coin shows whether the person has claimed it. Until they do, it is labelled community-created and unclaimed, and Rooter never suggests otherwise.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://rooter-3.gitbook.io/whitepaper/rooting.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
